Introduction to Forest Bathing:
A Japanese Tradition


The concept of Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) was born in Japan in the 1980s, in response to the country’s rapid industrialization and urbanization. As cities grew and technology advanced, people found themselves increasingly disconnected from nature. This disconnection led to rising levels of stress and mental health issues. To combat this, the Japanese government launched a nationwide campaign promoting Shinrin-yoku as a way to encourage people to spend more time in forests for both physical and mental health benefits.The term itself, Shinrin-yoku, directly translates to “Forest Bathing.” However, the word “bathing” refers not to literal water immersion but to an immersion in the atmosphere and environment of the forest. The idea is to take in the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of the forest, allowing the natural world to wash over you and restore balance.
